The pest that matters is the red palm weevil, a boring insect capable of hollowing out and killing a mature palm from the inside. The word that matters at any nursery is acclimatised. Ask where stock was grown, favour plants that look slightly weathered over lush perfect specimens, and buy in October or November when new-season stock arrives and everything you plant gets five gentle months to establish roots before its first summer.
