Vitamin C by vein, from moderate to high doses — high doses need a blood test first.

Vitamin C drips are among the most common items on UAE IV menus, offered in doses from modest to very high. Giving vitamin C by vein can raise blood levels far above what tablets achieve, which is why high doses need care. Before a high-dose infusion, clinicians normally require a G6PD blood test, because people with G6PD deficiency — relatively common in people of Middle Eastern, African and South Asian heritage — can develop serious red-cell damage.

What it typically contains

  • Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) — dose set by the clinician; high doses are a separate category.
  • Fluid base — saline or sterile water depending on the dose and formulation.
  • Optional zinc or B vitamins — in combined immunity blends.

Formulations vary by provider. The final ingredients, doses and infusion rate are decided by the licensed clinician after assessing you, and may differ from this list.

Who usually asks for it

  • Adults interested in antioxidant support during busy seasons.
  • People asking about vitamin C for skin, often alongside glutathione.
  • Clients who prefer a single-vitamin drip rather than a blend.

Who should not have it, or must check with a doctor first

  • G6PD deficiency: high-dose vitamin C can cause haemolysis. A G6PD test is standard before high doses.
  • History of kidney stones or kidney disease: vitamin C is linked to oxalate stones.
  • Iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis, and some blood-glucose meters that read falsely high after vitamin C, should be discussed.

What happens at the appointment

For moderate doses, the visit looks like any other drip. For high doses, expect a blood test days beforehand and a slower infusion. If you monitor blood sugar with a fingerstick meter, ask the nurse whether readings may be affected for a while.

  1. You send the request on WhatsApp or in the app with your address, preferred time and any health conditions.
  2. A licensed clinician screens you: medical history, medicines, allergies and vital signs. They can decline or refer you elsewhere.
  3. If suitable, a nurse places a small cannula and stays with you for the whole infusion, adjusting the rate if needed.
  4. The cannula is removed, the site is dressed, and you are told what to watch for afterwards.

This is a longer infusion than most drips; plan to stay seated for an extended period.

How often do people have it?

Ask what dose is proposed, why, and how often. There is no strong evidence for routine high-dose vitamin C drips in healthy people.

What affects the price

  • Dose: higher doses use more product and take longer.
  • Whether G6PD screening is needed and arranged.
  • Combinations with zinc, glutathione or B vitamins.
  • Location and timing.

Who is allowed to give IV drips in the UAE

IV therapy is a medical procedure. In the UAE it must be given by a licensed doctor or nurse working for a licensed healthcare facility, after an assessment. In Dubai, providers are licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), or by the Dubai Healthcare City Authority for facilities in Dubai Healthcare City. In Abu Dhabi, including Al Ain, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) regulates providers. In Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, private providers operate under the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) licensing framework. You can ask the nurse for their licence details at any time.

Frequently asked questions

What is G6PD and why does it matter?

It is an enzyme that protects red blood cells. People with a deficiency can have red cells damaged by high-dose vitamin C, so testing comes first.

Does vitamin C prevent colds?

Research shows little effect on preventing colds in most people. Be cautious with promises.

Can I combine it with glutathione?

Some clinics do, sometimes in separate steps. Ask the clinician how they handle the combination.
