In DX systems, a drifted sensor can make the compressor short-cycle on and off every few minutes, the fastest known way to shorten its life. Placement causes phantom faults too: a stat on a wall backing a west-facing exterior reads hot and overcools the flat, and dying batteries produce random behaviour that gets misdiagnosed as everything else first.
