Respiratory PCR tests detect the genetic material of viruses such as COVID-19, influenza and RSV. Some people need them for travel or work requirements, others because a doctor wants to know which virus is causing symptoms. A home swab avoids taking an infectious illness into a clinic waiting room, which also protects others.

What is involved

  • Nasopharyngeal or nasal and throat swab.
  • Single-virus PCR (for example COVID-19) or multiplex respiratory panels as requested.
  • Results with a lab report where travel or employer documentation is needed.

Who usually books it

  • People with cold or flu-like symptoms whose doctor requests testing.
  • Travellers whose destination or airline requires a PCR result (check current rules).
  • Employees needing a test for workplace requirements.

How to prepare

  • Avoid eating, drinking or brushing teeth for a short period before a throat swab if the lab advises.
  • Have travel details and passport ready if the report is for travel.
  • Wear a mask when the collector arrives if you have symptoms.

What happens during the visit

The swab takes seconds and can be uncomfortable but brief. The collector wears protective equipment and seals the sample immediately.

Limits and warning signs

  • Difficulty breathing, chest pain, bluish lips or confusion need emergency care: call 999 or 998.
  • Travel requirements change; check with your airline or destination.

What affects the price

  • Single PCR versus multiplex panels.
  • Report urgency for travel.
  • Number of people tested.

Licensing of home healthcare in the UAE

Home healthcare in the UAE must be delivered by licensed professionals working for a licensed facility. In Dubai the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) licenses providers, with the Dubai Healthcare City Authority covering facilities in Dubai Healthcare City; in Abu Dhabi, including Al Ain, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) regulates them; in the other five emirates private providers operate under the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) licensing framework. Tamam passes your request to licensed vendors, and you can ask the visiting professional for licence details.

Medical disclaimer and emergencies

This page is general service information, not medical advice. A licensed provider must assess suitability, consent and any prescription or referral requirements. If symptoms are severe, sudden or life-threatening, contact the UAE emergency services instead of waiting for a home appointment.

999 · 998 In an emergency call 999, or 998 for an ambulance. Do not wait for a home appointment if you have chest pain, difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, a severe headache or signs of heat stroke.

Match the provider to the actual task. Ask what is included, what is excluded, whether materials are supplied and what happens if the assessment changes the scope. Regulated health work must be handled by an appropriately licensed healthcare provider. Never use a routine home-service booking for an emergency.
