It surprises many newcomers, but low vitamin D is commonly reported in the UAE: people spend much of the day indoors to avoid heat, cover their skin, and use sunscreen. The standard blood test measures 25-hydroxy vitamin D. It is a single tube that can be collected at home, and the result helps a doctor decide whether supplements are needed and at what dose.

What is involved

  • 25-hydroxy vitamin D, the standard marker of vitamin D status.
  • Often bundled with calcium, and sometimes with phosphate or parathyroid hormone if a doctor requests it.
  • Can be added to a broader checkup without an extra needle stick.

Who usually books it

  • People who spend most of the day indoors or in air-conditioning.
  • Adults with bone or muscle aches who are seeing a doctor about them.
  • People already taking vitamin D who want to check their level after a few months.

How to prepare

  • Fasting is not usually required for vitamin D alone; check if other tests are bundled.
  • Tell the collector about supplements you take and the dose.
  • If you are retesting, try to test at a similar time of year for comparison.

What happens during the visit

One small tube from a vein, usually taking a few minutes. The collector labels the tube in front of you and confirms how results will be delivered.

Limits and warning signs

  • Very high doses of vitamin D without testing can be harmful; follow a doctor's advice.
  • Bone pain with fractures or weakness needs medical assessment beyond a vitamin test.

What affects the price

  • Vitamin D alone versus a bundle with calcium or other markers.
  • Visit location and timing.
  • Whether a doctor's interpretation is included.

Licensing of home healthcare in the UAE

Home healthcare in the UAE must be delivered by licensed professionals working for a licensed facility. In Dubai the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) licenses providers, with the Dubai Healthcare City Authority covering facilities in Dubai Healthcare City; in Abu Dhabi, including Al Ain, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) regulates them; in the other five emirates private providers operate under the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) licensing framework. Tamam passes your request to licensed vendors, and you can ask the visiting professional for licence details.

Medical disclaimer and emergencies

This page is general service information, not medical advice. A licensed provider must assess suitability, consent and any prescription or referral requirements. If symptoms are severe, sudden or life-threatening, contact the UAE emergency services instead of waiting for a home appointment.

999 · 998 In an emergency call 999, or 998 for an ambulance. Do not wait for a home appointment if you have chest pain, difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, a severe headache or signs of heat stroke.

Frequently asked questions

Why is vitamin D low in such a sunny country?

Heat drives people indoors, clothing covers much of the skin, and sunscreen blocks the UV light that skin uses to make vitamin D.

How often should I test?

Your doctor will advise; many retest a few months after starting supplements to check the dose is right.

Can children be tested at home?

Yes, with a collector experienced with children and a parent present. See the paediatric sample collection page.

Match the provider to the actual task. Ask what is included, what is excluded, whether materials are supplied and what happens if the assessment changes the scope. Regulated health work must be handled by an appropriately licensed healthcare provider. Never use a routine home-service booking for an emergency.
