The UAE hosts marathons, triathlons, cycling tours and an active padel and CrossFit scene, and recovery drips are marketed to all of them. They typically combine fluids, electrolytes, magnesium, amino acids and B vitamins. Competitive athletes should know that the World Anti-Doping Agency restricts IV infusions above a set volume in a 12-hour period unless given in hospital or with a therapeutic use exemption, regardless of what is in the bag.
What it typically contains
- Fluids and electrolytes — the base.
- Magnesium — commonly included.
- Amino acids and B vitamins — in many versions.
Formulations vary by provider. The final ingredients, doses and infusion rate are decided by the licensed clinician after assessing you, and may differ from this list.
Who usually asks for it
- Recreational runners and cyclists after a long event in the heat.
- Gym and CrossFit athletes during heavy training phases.
- Teams or clubs arranging recovery days, with each athlete assessed individually.
Who should not have it, or must check with a doctor first
- Tested athletes: check the current WADA list and your federation's rules before any infusion.
- Severe cramps, confusion or collapse after an event need emergency care; over-drinking can also be dangerous (low sodium).
- Kidney and heart conditions need a doctor's decision.
What happens at the appointment
The nurse asks about the event, fluids taken, weight change if known and any symptoms. Cool down and change before the visit. The drip runs while you rest.
- You send the request on WhatsApp or in the app with your address, preferred time and any health conditions.
- A licensed clinician screens you: medical history, medicines, allergies and vital signs. They can decline or refer you elsewhere.
- If suitable, a nurse places a small cannula and stays with you for the whole infusion, adjusting the rate if needed.
- The cannula is removed, the site is dressed, and you are told what to watch for afterwards.
How often do people have it?
Usually after specific events or blocks of training. Regular drips are not a replacement for a recovery plan built on food, fluids and sleep.
What affects the price
- Volume and ingredients.
- Group bookings for teams.
- Event-day timing and location.
- Doctor input for competitive athletes needing documentation.

Who is allowed to give IV drips in the UAE
IV therapy is a medical procedure. In the UAE it must be given by a licensed doctor or nurse working for a licensed healthcare facility, after an assessment. In Dubai, providers are licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), or by the Dubai Healthcare City Authority for facilities in Dubai Healthcare City. In Abu Dhabi, including Al Ain, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) regulates providers. In Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, private providers operate under the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) licensing framework. You can ask the nurse for their licence details at any time.
